June marks the start of summertime celebrations we so eagerly await here at Loggerhead Marinelife Center, including World Ocean (June 8) and Sea Turtle Day (June 16). If you’re new, we’ll quickly fill you in on why these days deserve international attention.

On World Ocean Day, we recognize the extensive role the ocean plays into our everyday lives. The ocean covers over 70% of the planet and acts as a major powerhouse for humanity’s well-being and that of every other organism on earth. The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, is home to most of Earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. However, having stripped 90% of big fish populations and devastating 50% of coral reefs, we need an annual, if not every day, nudge to intentionally replenish and protect our oceans. 

Later in the month, we arrive at World Sea Turtle Day, a day that shows the resilience of the marine species, but also the magnitude of the threats they face. With poachers, predators, unintended boat strikes, and 8 million tons of plastics entering their ecosystem every year, we face the grave reality of losing a species if we don’t educate and generate awareness on their behalf. Fortunately, it doesn’t take a herculean effort to show your support. Instead, stick to our shopping guide to do some good.
